Shattered dreams and inner strength

From the time we can remember, our heads are filled with dreams of how our lives will turn out when we get that little bit older and become ‘grown ups’.

Some of us dream of growing up and being a policeman, a doctor, nurse or even a chef. But as we progress in life, our dreams take a different path for one reason or another. From day to day we snake through the jungle of what we call life.

So when we are old enough and entrenched in a full time job, and perhaps not the one we dreamt about in our younger years. We keep going and make the best of what we have. Because it’s what we do. We keep going and don’t give up.

But the thought of giving up on our dreams is something that is easier to do than to keep chasing. The dreams from our childhood or others dreams that have flooded our minds as we have grown up.

And then there comes a time in our lives when something happens and takes away all our dreams in the blink of an eye. An instant that changes us and the very person we are, and all our dreams go up in a puff of smoke. Gone. But not forgotten.

It’s at this point we realise we have choices. Get up of our bums, dust ourselves off and keep chasing our dreams. Or we can let go of what we wanted and quietly fade away into the background of life.

One option is so much easier that the other. But they are exactly that. Options.

I know that getting up and forging forward after a setback, and then another is not as simple as that. It takes strength, inner strength. Not just physical strength to get out of bed every morning. But the mental strength to to know that what we want can’t be achieved alone. And that’s the tough part. Admitting we can’t go it alone.

It’s at this point we need to lean on someone who is there for us and who is willing to break through the mental barrier that is holding us back from achieving our goals. Our happiness.

We’re only human. And we have flaws and failures. And to continue on, we really need to admit to ourselves we need that helping hand.

Let others help when they want. They are the ones who see us when we are down and out. Even when we see a perfect future ahead of us.

Hidden Dreams

I had a dream that no one else could see.

This happens to be the case for many people. They live their lives dreaming of something they think they truly need. Or are least something their heart desires. Want versus need is a real struggle for all of us.

The dream can be anything from owning a brand new Ferrari or top of the range Mercedes Benz. The cars may be out of their price range, but they can still dream of what the soft leather seats would feel like as they slip behind the custom built steering wheel.

Others dream of jetting around the globe, flying first class, sipping French champagne in the VIP lounge before take off. And when they arrive at the next destination, staying in 5 star hotels and resorts.

They are great dreams and we are happy enough to share them with family and friends when they ask what we really want in life and the future. We can go into details of every part of what we want.

Like many people, I have dreams of new cars, a new road bike that’s worth more than my current car. I fantasise of overseas trips and travel through cities far from home while eating delicacies from the local cafes and bars.

But then there are the dreams we keep to ourselves and keep hidden in the dark depths of our minds, and only let them come to the surface when we feel the need to really dream.

These are the dreams that are so much closer to the heart. They don’t involve cars, travel or far off locations. They are the dreams our hearts not only desire, but are the very dreams that make us smile the moment we let them shine through all the grime of our daily lives.

Perhaps it’s time we let others know of our heartfelt dreams. We might be pleasantly surprised when others show us they want the same thing, but were also afraid to let their dreams.

Live life. Dream big.

Our Responsibilities

When we wake up everyday, we don’t expect or anticipate to go out into the world and cause havoc and heartbreak to the ones close to our hearts. But there are times we do, and we do these wrong things on purpose.

Deep down we feel as if we are doing the right thing, in our minds there is no other option. We have looked at all possible avenues and nothing else shone through. That might actually the case, so we could let it slide, or continue with what we have planned.

We have convinced ourselves that what we are going to do will somehow make things better for us and others around us. Our minds are unable to see another path forward, so we forge ahead with the original plan.

Even while we are executing the very well thought out plan, there is no doubt in our minds it’s all good and the end result is what everyone will want. But what if we had asked for a second opinion before we plunged head first into the deep end.

Our blinkered view may have been exactly that. Narrow and short sighted. But that one thing we never thought about or even considered. Asking someone else if we were really heading down the right for path.

There is no harm in getting a second opinion, it may do more than just save some serious embarrassment, it may keep a very close friendship intact.

But in the end, we all make mistakes we may regret. That’s life.

Eat, drink and be merry

After watching a program on the BBC about the benefits of eating less meat to stay healthier and extend our lives, it got me thinking about how we live and what we really want from life.

The results from the various studies showed that eating less processed meats and eating a diet of fresh fruit and veggies with lean meat is good for us. Something all of us already know, but don’t always live by.

But in no way does that mean we need to cut out all those so called ‘bad foods’ from our daily lives. We only live once, and food is not only something we need to keep us going, it’s also a huge part of our social lives.

The joys of preparing a home cooked meal to share with the family brings happiness to those enjoying the meal, and the people who have prepared the dishes.

The same applies when heading out and dining in a classy restaurant or a top notch cafe. It’s the food, the ambiance, the experience and the company that make the mouth watering food even more appealing.

In the long run, we can eat as healthy as we like and hoping to live longer. But what happens if you are hit by a bus or a car and your life ends there and then? All that healthy eating didn’t extend your life at all.

So we should eat, drink and be merry. As none of us know if there is a car or bus around the corner that will put an end to our already short time on earth.

Heart of Glass

Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never break me. So the saying goes.

Breaking a bone in your body is a very painful experience. It can take between 8-12 weeks to heal, depending on the bone and how badly it was broken. This is something I learnt the hard way.

But when your heart is broken, it’s more like the shattering of a fragile crystal decanter. Tiny slivers of your heart are strewn far and wide, and no matter how hard you search for those broken pieces, there will always be a tiny sliver missing.

It’s that missing sliver that will keep your heart from healing and getting back to its original condition. But in no way does that mean a broken heart can’t be healed.

Admittedly, it may take time, and the right person to administer the right potion to replace that missing sliver. More than the 12 weeks it takes for a bone to heal.

If your heart has been shattered, just know that time will eventually heal it. Be patient, as good things come to those who wait. And the wait is worthwhile.

Live life and be happy

One_live_to_Live

We have but one life to live, and we must do everything in our power to ensure we are happy.  In some cases, no matter what the outcome is for those around us.

This is something that we should all think about, no matter what stage we are in our lives. Young, old, single or in a relationship. Our happiness starts, and ends with us. We don’t need to rely on anyone else in  our lives to bring that smile to our faces and make us walk with a pep in our step.

No matter who we have around us in our lives, they are there for a reason, but is that reason to make us happy? They may be there to make us smile and share good times with, and if we are in a relationship, there is more than just a few laughs and smiles we want from our partners, it’s love, understanding  and friendship.

friendship and understnading

So when we start to feel we are on that e, we need to look in our own minds and hearts to get us back on track and get that smile back our dial. In the end, we are the only ones who are in complete control of our happiness, even when we have so much going on around us.

We need to take control of what is bringing us down and keeping us from cracking a smile. If there is something that is holding us back from true happiness, we either need to make a change, or ditch the negativeness and get back on track.

The longer we are happier in our own skins, the longer we can continue to bring happiness to others. And that my friends, is what life’s all about. Sharing joy and happiness.

Big Wheel Turning

Once the wheel stops turning, we are left at a standstill. It’s then at that point we begin to sit in one place and the rut sets in.

Like anything in life, once it stops, it collects moss, the same as a rolling stone that has stopped turning.

So it’s up to us to make sure that big wheel of life keeps turning. Without our drive and motivation we will end up the same as the moss covered stone. And that’s something we really don’t want, because frogs sit on stones covered in moss.

But staying motivated isn’t as easy as flicking a switch and turning on a light. It takes effort, and at times, lots of it. And this is when we need to dig deep and prove to ourselves we really want what’s sitting just out of arms reach.

There are different approaches when searching for motivation, but in the end, no matter how we dredge it up, it gets us there in the end.

Stay strong and positive. Your motivation is there, it’s just hiding amongst the layers of wrapping that comes with life.
